Qi2.2 Wireless Furniture Charging:
OEM Guide 2026

Last Updated: March 19, 2026By: GLOB-EL Technical Editorial Team

What Furniture OEMs Need to Know About Qi2.2 in 2026

If you are a furniture manufacturer planning to add wireless charging to your next product line, you are probably looking at the Qi2.2 standard and wondering: is this the right time to commit? The short answer is yes — and this guide will show you exactly why, and exactly how to do it without costly certification mistakes or thermal failures in the field.

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) officially published the Qi2.2 specification in late 2024. By July 2025, the first Qi2.2 certified products hit the market — including the 25W magnetic modules now available for furniture integration. As of early 2026, over 2,450 Qi2-family certified products exist across all categories, and the standard has reached a level of ecosystem maturity that makes it safe to design around for a 3–5 year product lifecycle.

For furniture OEMs specifically, the jump from old-style Qi1 puck chargers to Qi2.2 embedded modules is not just a speed upgrade. It solves the three biggest complaints that caused furniture companies to shy away from wireless charging integrations in the past: inconsistent charging when the phone was not perfectly centered, excessive heat buildup in wood surfaces, and the nightmare of certifying a charging accessory embedded in a furniture product for multiple markets simultaneously.

Understanding Qi2.2: The Magnetic Power Profile Explained

Think of Qi2.2 as the difference between a key that fits exactly one lock (magnetic alignment) versus trying to push a plug into a power strip in the dark (old Qi1 free-positioning). The defining feature of Qi2.2 is the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) — a ring of precisely calibrated permanent magnets built into both the transmitting module and the receiving device. These magnets snap the phone into the correct position automatically, every single time, with a tactile click.

Why Magnetic Alignment Matters for Furniture:

It eliminates the power waste caused by misalignment. When a Qi1 pad was misaligned, it pushed extra power through the coils to compensate, generating heat. With Qi2.2's MPP, the coils are always concentric, and energy transfer efficiency stays above 85%. At 25W output, this means the module dissipates only about 4W as heat rather than the 8–15W waste common with older Qi1 installations.

The technical specification requires a minimum magnet array diameter of 45.7 mm (compliant with Apple MagSafe interoperability) with field strength calibrated to provide between 2.5 N and 6.5 N of snap force — strong enough to auto-align but gentle enough that a user can lift their phone with one hand.

Module Selection: 15W vs. 25W for Different Applications

Not every piece of furniture needs the highest power available. Choosing the wrong power rating is a common and expensive mistake — either under-specifying (frustrating users) or over-specifying (creating unnecessary thermal issues). Here is a practical framework based on real-world scenarios.

Furniture CategoryRecommended PowerTypical Use CaseKey Design Constraint
Home Desk / Study Table25W Qi2.2Daily driver charging during work hoursThermal dissipation in MDF/plywood top
Bedroom Nightstand15W Qi2.2Overnight charging, low ambient noiseStandby power < 0.5W (Ecodesign 2052)
Office Workstation25W Qi2.2Fast top-up between meetings (20 min)EMC compliance — proximity to monitors
Hotel Bedside Unit15W Qi2.2Guest convenience, multi-user resetCE + UKCA dual compliance, MOQ
Conference Table25W (Multi-zone)Multiple simultaneous device chargingCoil spacing min 150mm to prevent cross-talk
Retail Display Counter15W Qi2.2Demo device charging, staff phonesContinuous duty cycle, 16-hour/day operation

The 25W versus 15W decision matters most in hospitality applications. EU Ecodesign Regulation 2025/2052 sets a maximum standby power of 0.5W. The 25W module runs slightly warmer in standby, which can push designs over this threshold. GLOB-EL's hotel-specification 15W modules are firmware-configured to enter a 0.18W standby mode after 10 minutes of no-device detection, comfortably meeting the regulation while remaining ready to charge within 200 milliseconds.

Thermal Management: Protecting Wood Furniture from Heat

Let us talk about the problem that has killed more furniture wireless charging projects than any certification issue: heat. Wood is an excellent thermal insulator. Without a thermal management plan, a 25W Qi2.2 module PCB temperature rises above 70°C within 30 minutes, triggering the mandatory WPC thermal protection protocol, which steps power down to 5W.

The solution is a three-layer thermal design approach that GLOB-EL uses:

1. Graphite Thermal Interface Pad (TIP)

A 1 mm graphite sheet between the module PCB and the router recess in the wood conducts heat laterally at 150–300 W/m·K. This spreads heat over a larger surface area, reducing peak surface temperature by 12–18°C.

2. Engineered Air Gap

A minimum 3 mm air channel below the module allows passive convective airflow. Even without forced air, natural convection removes 1.5–2.5W continuously.

3. Ferrite Core Optimization

Ferrite shields above the transmit coil block the magnetic field from penetrating downward, preventing eddy currents from heating structural metal hardware (screws, hinges) beneath the desk.

EMC Compliance and Certifications Required

A conference room table with six embedded Qi2.2 charging zones and a presentation laptop nearby is a recipe for EMC trouble — unless the modules are properly shielded. The 100–205 kHz operating frequency of Qi2 inductive power transfer can disrupt 2.4 GHz wireless peripherals (mice, Bluetooth headsets) if harmonics are not suppressed.

If you buy a pre-certified Qi2.2 module and embed it, the module supplier is responsible for the module's CE/UKCA Declaration of Conformity. The key certifications for EU market access are:

  • CE Marking (LVD 2014/35/EU): Covers electrical safety at 50–1000V AC for the power supply unit.

  • CE Marking (RED 2014/53/EU): Covers the wireless transmission functionality. Requires meeting EN 55032 Class B emission limits.

  • IEC 62368-1:2023: The unified safety standard for IT equipment. Mandatory for modules sold after Jan 2025.

  • EU Ecodesign Regulation 2025/2052: Sets energy efficiency and standby limits.

  • WPC Qi2.2 Certification: Ensures interoperability and thermal safety protocol compliance.

Integration Workflow: From Delivery to Finished Furniture

1
Router Template InstallationThe recess diameter must be 75 mm (for a 68 mm module body), positioning the top face 5–7 mm below the finished desk surface. GLOB-EL supplies DXF/G-code templates for standard CNC routers.
2
Thermal Interface Pad ApplicationPeel and stick the 75 mm diameter graphite TIP into the bottom of the recess (adhesive facing the wood).
3
Module Mounting & Cable RoutingSecure with four M3 countersunk screws. The DC input accepts 12–20V at up to 2.5A. The locking 4-pin Molex MicroFit cannot be connected backwards.
4
Function Test Before Assembly ClosurePlace a Qi2-certified test phone on the zone. If the phone charges at reduced power (5W safety mode), the module depth is likely >8 mm from the surface. Adjust recess depth and retest.
